Ch-ch-ch-ch-changes (updated 2013-14 curriculum)

Ha! Did I say I had planned our 2013-14 curriculum? I lied. I went to order some of the books and when I looked over them again I realized that Brady had already inferred or we had already covered a lot of  the material so I’ve done some revising (ok a LOT of revising :-p) and here’s where we stand now. Please note: many of these books I already own, I dvr’d “Liberty’s Kids”, Kahn Academy is free as are the K12 materials. I’m not spending nearly as much as this probably makes it look like I am, but I wanted to share the resources I’ve found (and these are not affiliate links so feel free to click through)

Language Arts:

K12:

K12 Language Arts Blue includes:

K12 Phonics Works Basic

K12 Read-aloud Treasury

K12 World Magazines

Handwriting Without Tears Get Set for School and Letters and Numbers for Me

K12 “All About Me”

Our Curriculum:

Reading: I’m going to go ahead and call the library our reading curriculum this year, I’m not particularly worried about this child reading lol

Reading Comprehension: Spectrum Reading 4 (and likely 5)

Spelling: Spectrum Spelling 3 (and likely 4)

Creative Writing: Rip the Page

Math:

K12:

Math+ K Blue

Our Curriculum:

Saxon Math 1 and Manipulatives Kit

After going back  and forth between Saxon and Math-u-See we finally decided to go with:

Miquon Math The Orange Book (and very likely The Red Book afterwards) with their cuisenaire rods

as well as The Complete Book of Math Grades 1-2 (to make sure we aren’t missing anything since Miquon does not follow the typical scope-and-sequence)

We made this decision because I was worried Saxon’s spiral would be confusing and/or boring for Brady and, while I thought their manipulative kit looked fun, we already have many of their hands-on materials. Miquon’s cuisenaire rods seem similar to Math-U-See’s manipulatives, but the initial investment is lower so I won’t feel as bad about changing if it doesn’t work for us.

We will also use Khan Academy for review and extra practice.

Science:

“Animals in Winter” by Henrietta Bancroft & Richard G. Van Gelder

“The Big Dipper” by Franklyn Branley
